The American experience of Alceu Amoroso Lima

Abstract

This text discusses the book A realidade americana written by the Brazilian catholic intellectual Alceu Amoroso Lima. Being, at the same time, a travel account and an essay, A realidade americana describes the change of Amoroso Lima's relation to the USA ' from a vigorous critical position to a mainly positive one. That shift was interpreted by Amoroso Lima in terms of his Christian faith and was also justified by the same belief. Enlarging that focus, this paper suggests that the mentioned change may be useful in the analysis of other shifts in Amoroso Lima's thought and trajectory.
