From French and Raven (1959) to the Power/Interaction Model of Interpesonal Influence: a discussion of power and social influence

Abstract

It’s observed in Organizational Behavior's literature (OB), that power is a subject quite discussed. Somech and Drach-Zahavy (2002) point out that French and Raven’s (1959) typology has been one of the most popular approaches for interpessoal influence bases of power conceituação. It is noticed an influence of the understanding of French and Raven (1959) of the power and of the influence and the frequent use of the typology of power presented by them, in books of the area of OB published in Brazil. However, progresses accomplished by Bertran Raven, one of the authors of the seminal work of 1959, is not discussed. With base in the exposed above, it is sought in this rehearsal to rescue the words of French and Raven (1959) in way to present the authors' original idea, without the influence of paraphrases and translations, because it is believed that this procedure can contribute to the best understanding of the construtos to can and influence. Besides, the Power/Interaction Model of Interpesonal Influence, developed and discussed in several texts by Bertran Raven, is presented. Through theories of Impressiom Management a critic is accomplished and an alteration is proposed to the original Power/Interaction Model conception.
