Abstract

In this essay, we looked at the tensions that manifest themselves in the transmission of popular culture among generations in a time of globalization. The essay focuses on the ethnographic field work developed with the group Jongo do Tamandaré, located in Guaratinguetá city, São Paulo countryside, with which the researcher looked into apprehending the experience of transmission of collective practices and values. Starting with a revision of the development of immaterial patrimony policies, from supranational agencies to the Brazilian scenery, six factors of change are identified and considered relevant in the new means of transmission found in the study group: children and non-African descendants’ participation, jongo’s visibility, practice formalization, official acknowledgement of jongo’s masters, focus on future, enlargement of the social groups involved in jongo. These factors point towards some challenges for cultural policies committed to the promotion of diversity, the most important of which is rethinking about the way we look at the individuals, groups and “immaterial cultural assets” which public actions intend to value.
