The financing of urban development in Brazil - The case of the metropolitan area of São Paulo

Abstract
The author starts his article with a brief description of the deep changes occurred in the Brazilian economy during the middle 40's, when industrialization and urbanization were accelerated.
He continues to criticize spatial dispersion in terms of the urban system as a whole, calling attention to the obvious regional unbalances prevailing in Brazil.
After a rapid commentary on some qualitative aspects of urban Brazilian development, the writer makes a brief evaluation of the institutional framework of urban planning in the country, procedure which only now is being effectively adopted in Brazil.
