Abstract

The result of a bibliographical research, this article deals with the development and vicissitudes of urban workers in Brazil, and with their relationships

with the State.

Covering a period starting from the final decade of the last century and reaching our time, the study especially emphasizes the significant role played by trade unions in the organization of urban working classes, and also in their relationship with State's institutions and authorities.
