Waste management in the state of São Paulo: and the challenge of sustainable development

Abstract
This paper lists a few aspects of waste management in the state of São Paulo, so as to contribute to the environmental management debate. It first presents the general characteristics of the subject, and then the technical, institutional and economic dimensions. The major conclusion is that there is a pressing need to transform the concept of environmental control, stressing on prevention, though not disregarding correction, through a dynamics that includes the diversity of interests and views of the world found in society.
