Projects of development and environmental impact: a historical view from the standpoint of the development bank
Main Article Content
Abstract
Starting from the middle of the present century, the Brazilian development has been based on a strategy centered in industrialization. However, the consensus which prevails on the "ecological crisis" has led to a questioning of some aspects of that strategy. As society gets worried about the quality of life, there is a trand towards investments in pollution control. The Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social- BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), as the major governmental agency in Brazil for the support of business enterprises, has an important role in the orientation of environmental investment consistent with the country's environmental policy.
