Employment in health in the recent conjuncture: Lessons for health reform

Abstract
This article intends to describe and analyze the major trends concerning the behavior of the labor-market in the area of health in Brazil, from 1976
to 1984.
Three basic tendencies have been identified in the '80s: an increase in employment in the public sector, as compared with increases observed in the private sector, a greater participation of employment in ambulatorial establishments relatively to jobs in hospitals, as well as an increase in the employment of medium level professional people in the composition of health teams.
