FAMERJ versus BNH: a case study about urban social movements

Abstract
In this artic1e, the writers offer a general theoretical picture describing and analyzing the origins, characteristics and efficacy of urban social movements, as
well as the origins and proposals of the Federação das Associações de Moradores do Rio de Janeiro - Famerj (Rio de Janeiro - Federation of Residents Associations).
They discuss also the housing policy of the Banco Nacional da Habitação - BNH (National Housing Bank) and proceed to analyzing the reasons for its struggle against the BNH, the strategies applied and victories won, trying to prove that the direct goal of such effort (acquisition of self-owned houses) is in itself one of the relevant aspects of the pursuit of an individual identity.
