Abstract

This paper describes the process of institutional interchange and conflict negotiation conducted by various stakeholders of the cocoa agriindustrial chain during the implementation of the Cocoa Bioplant Institute, in Ilhéus, state of Bahia, Brazil. The cocoa bioplant is the first unit in the world to propagate special genetic material for cocoa culture in a industrial scale. It also figures as a strategic piece for the competitive restructuring of the cocoa agriindustrial chain in Bahia. To explain this trajectory, the authors constructed a theoretical scheme based on the new institutionalist approach
and the concept of agriindustrial chains as an “orchestration of multiple interests”, centered on its political-institutional dimension.
